Therapy, Reimagined: Healing in the Heart of Nature

Nature-Informed Therapy is now available outdoors this summer — in the forest and by the ocean!

This summer, therapy sessions are stepping outside. I am excited to offer Nature-Informed Therapy (NIT) in two extraordinary outdoor settings right here in the greater Boston area: the charming forests of Breakheart Reservation in Wakefield and the serene shores of Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Whether you are drawn to the grounding stillness of towering trees or the expansive openness of the ocean, there is a natural setting waiting to support your healing journey.

Nature-Informed Therapy views your relationship with the natural world as a genuine agent of change — not merely a backdrop, but an active participant in your growth and healing. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature reduces stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, lifts mood, and enhances our capacity for reflection and insight. When therapy happens outdoors, something shifts: conversations flow more naturally, defenses soften, and the wisdom of the living world becomes available to us in real time.

Forest Sessions: Breakheart Reservation, Saugus

Breakheart Reservation is a stunning 700-acre woodland sanctuary tucked within the suburbs north of Boston. Its trails wind through rocky ridges, beneath a canopy of oak and maple, past two pristine lakes — Pearce and Silver. Walking here, you can feel the city fall away.

Beach Sessions: Singing Beach, Manchester-by-the-Sea

Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea is one of New England’s most beloved coastal treasures — named for the soft singing sound the sand makes beneath your feet. The expansive horizon, the rhythm of the waves, and the salty air create a uniquely therapeutic atmosphere that is both energizing and deeply calming.

What to Expect in an Outdoor Session

Outdoor sessions are as structured or as open as you need them to be. All of the evidence-based approaches we use in traditional therapy — mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment-informed work, somatic awareness, and psycho-spiritual exploration — can be woven seamlessly into a nature setting. Here is what outdoor sessions can look like:

  • Walk-and-Talk: A gentle walk while we talk, allowing movement to loosen what sitting still sometimes holds tight. Many clients find it easier to access difficult emotions when they are in motion.

  • Seated Nature Sessions: We can bring chairs or find a comfortable spot to sit— overlooking the lake at Breakheart or facing the ocean at Singing Beach — for a more traditional conversation held in nature’s embrace.

  • Nature-Enhanced Mindfulness: Using the sights, sounds, and sensations of our natural surroundings as anchors for present-moment awareness, awe walks, and gratitude practices.

  • Metaphor and Reflection: Drawing on what nature offers — a fallen tree, the incoming tide, a shaft of light through the leaves — as mirrors for what is happening in your own life and healing.
